ANU Student’s sculpture welcomed in Denman Prospect’s growing art collection

Three, bright-red, steel pieces shaped like Eucalyptus leaves are now adorning the front of the Denman Village Shops after a final-year ANU sculpture student won a competition to build her sculpture in the Molonglo Valley’s newest suburb.

Naomi Taylor Royds’ Eucalyptus Triad, the ninth piece of public art commissioned for Denman Prospect, is now complete and installed. The sculpture is inspired by the simple organic shapes of the native Eucalyptus trees that surround Canberra and Denman Prospect. It consists of three steel parts, each of which is approximately six metres high with elevated circles representing the colours of the many blossoms produced by eucalyptus trees.

“It’s been a great experience and exciting to see Eucalyptus Triad installed at Denman Prospect for all to enjoy,” said Naomi Taylor Royds. “It’s wonderful to see the sculpture standing majestically in its intended surroundings.”

Capital Airport Group managed the fabrication and installation of the sculpture with input from Ms Royds. Entrants to the sculpture design competition were encouraged to come up with a design that used durable and low maintenance materials, that would complement the suburb of Denman Prospect and its local shops. Ms Royd’s winning entry fitted the brief by designing a piece that was minimalistic, slender and allowed for heavy pedestrian traffic around the base of the sculpture.

Eucalyptus Triad is now part of Denman Prospect’s prestigious collection of art created by some of the most renowned sculptors from across the world. The entire design and development of Denman Prospect is underpinned by an absolute commitment to quality and excellence in urban design, incorporating landscaping and public art.
“At Denman Prospect, we are striving to build a community that all Canberrans can enjoy and public art is a large part of our strategy to build an unforgettable neighbourhood,” says Nick McDonald Crowley, Director of Project Delivery at Denman Prospect. “We are also committed to helping local artists. Naomi is a talented up-and-coming artist who has created just the sculpture we were looking for.”

“As an emerging artist, I’m grateful for this incredible opportunity and for the assistance and inclusion from the team at The Capital Airport Group and Austec Engineering,” said Ms Royds.

In addition to getting to see her design come to fruition, Naomi won $5000 for her winning entry.

Second Homes for Homes donation, just in time for Christmas.

Denman Prospect makes second donation to Homes for Homes, just in time for Christmas.

Denman Prospect continues its commitment to support Homes for Homes with it’s second annual donation for more than $120,000.

The Big Issue’s Homes for Homes initiative raises money for projects that address the shortage of social and affordable housing in the ACT. When Denman Prospect residents buy their land, 0.1 per cent of the sale price is donated to organisations like Havelock Housing which provides long-term accommodation for women in Canberra. Havelock will receive this year’s funding which came from the settlement of 202 blocks.

“We know that there has been an increase of older women and children struggling with the reality of becoming homeless and looking for more help”, says Stephen Byron, Managing Director of Capital Airport Group. “We want to support our community and give land buyers a chance to support their neighbours in need too. The uptake of this initiative is a credit to the community that is being created at Denman Prospect, and we are very proud of the outcome and the overwhelming spirit of generosity that they are showing”.

Canberra’s largest green roof unveiled at Denman Prospect

Denman Village Shops features a uniquely-constructed and eco-friendly green roof that is a sustainable alternative to an aluminium or steel roof. The green roof was designed to reflect the curves of the natural topography of the land surrounding it and is the largest green roof of its kind in the ACT.

In addition to keeping the building cool in the summer and warm in the winter, the plants, shrubs and flowers planted on the green roof will provide a beautiful focal point for people driving down Holborow Avenue. The roof also provides more great views for the residents in the apartments and houses behind the Shops, acting as a garden to look at from their balconies.

The Denman Village Shops green roof has been planted with more than 4,000 native, drought-tolerant and low-maintenance plants and shrubs to attract birds and insects. Local Canberra landscape architects and Canberra Airport’s horticulturalists specifically chose plants with proven track records to tolerate the harsh Canberra climate and exposed conditions of this unique structure.

Plants chosen include Banksia integrifolia, Chysocephalum apiculatum, Loropetulum ‘Burgandy dwarf’, Grevillea ‘Poorinda Royal Mantle’, Lomandra confertifolia. The plants have a primary role of attracting wildlife but will also filter the atmospheric CO², insulating the building and lowering the heat sink effect in lieu of a reflective metal roof. While these well-suited plants and shrubs will provide a beautiful vista throughout the year, there will be an additional 50,000 bulbs planted in winter 2019 for a spectacular springtime display.

The green roof is also designed to capture the rain and filters rainwater that is then channeled to and stored in a 20kL rainwater tank that supplies a dripper system for drier spells of weather.

The developers of Denman Prospect, Capital Airport Group, have focused on creating a suburb that is eco-friendly, with beautiful outdoor and comfortable community spaces that appeal to all residents.

The Farm IGA opening soon in Denman Prospect

New supermarket will open soon at Denman Prospect in the Molonglo Valley

Denman Prospect and Steve Smith, the owner of the Yass Supa IGA, are bringing a unique, high-quality fresh produce, meat and vegie market to the Molonglo Valley.

The Farm at Denman Prospect will open at the Denman Village Shops in January 2019. It will feature the same exceptional fresh bread, fruit, vegetable and meat selection that the Yass store is known for, in a 1,000m² shop designed by Denman Prospect and the team behind Canberra Airport.

“We are delighted to partner with Steve whose shop is widely-recognised for its exceptional quality,” says Nick McDonald Crowley, Director – Project Delivery, Denman Prospect. “Before the Capital Airport Group redeveloped the terminal, they toured airports across the world to see what is outstanding. Similarly, the Denman team toured grocery stores to influence the design and create the highest-quality, fresh-food market, unlike anything else in Canberra.”
“This will be a world-class supermarket,” says Steve Smith of The Farm at Denman Prospect. “The design is fantastic, and it will showcase all of the fresh produce and meat people love us for in Yass, but also healthy prepared foods such as sushi and baked goods. We will elevate the local grocery store and give the Molonglo Valley the best selection and a high-quality shopping experience.”

The Farm at Denman Prospect will also help to grow the community-oriented and charitable spirit that Denman Prospect has become known for. Mr Smith has widely supported the local drought appeal, schools and charities. He says The Farm at Denman Prospect will participate in local fundraising and Denman Prospect shoppers can contribute IGA card reward points to their favourite charities.

The Farm at Denman Prospect is the largest retail space at the Denman Village Shops which is set below 16 residential terraces, with views toward the National Arboretum Canberra. It will be the largest store alongside eight specialty shops, a medical centre, a childcare centre, a gym and a café. Expressions of Interest are currently being accepted for the café space.

“We aren’t just building a suburb,” says Mr McDonald-Crowley. “We are building a community with partners, like Steve, who understand the importance of how strong, community-minded, retail can anchor a neighbourhood. He is an exceptional retailer who will only enhance our offering to buyers looking for a host of amenities to enrich their lives, expansive views, beautiful outdoor spaces and stunning public art.”

101 Lucky Purchasers Today in Denman Prospect

Denman Prospect is passing a very lucky milestone today with 101 blocks of land in Denman Heights being settled today, 8/8/2018.

In some cultures, eight is considered a lucky number that can bring wealth and prosperity. A home with an address containing an eight or with numbers that add up to eight are considered to be auspicious purchases.

“This is a lucky day for our newest neighbours,” says Nick McDonald Crowley, Project Director, Capital Estate Developments. “Our current residents are very happy with their blocks, the homes they have built, and the active community we have created.”

All 101 sites are located on the northeastern face of Denman Heights, in close proximity to Ridgeline Park and its expansive walking trails with beautiful views across the Molonglo Valley and beyond to the city.

Some blocks of land were sold ‘off the plan’ more than 12 months ago. After today’s lucky settlement, buyers can commence building their homes. Within the coming months, it is expected that a number of homes will have begun construction.

Within the next few weeks, six town homes and apartment sites will also close. These will be located in close proximity to the Denman Shops which are scheduled to open later this year. New public art is also set to be unveiled across Denman Prospect in the coming months.

“We have been deliberate about all of the amenities that we are offering our residents and look forward to the shops opening,” says Mr. McDonald Crowley. “Once the community sees this magnificent retail space, our expansive views, and the stunning public art we have added to Denman Prospect, we believe that the few blocks w have left will go rather quickly.”

First Senior’s Community in Molonglo Valley coming to Denman Prospect

Capital Airport Group and retirement living developers, IRT, have reached an agreement to bring Molonglo Valley’s first-ever seniors’ lifestyle and care community to Denman Prospect. The new high-quality housing community and retail site will be part of the master plan to incorporate housing, retail and lifestyle features that encourage community interaction over many generations.

“We were looking for a high-calibre partner with the same values as Capital Airport Group,” Stephen Byron, Managing Director of Capital Airport Group said. “IRT is known for providing seniors with the best care at the right time. Denman Prospect is a unique offering and IRT’s development will create a one-of-a-kind facility for Canberra and Molonglo Valley.”

The land, when developed by IRT, will feature independent living units, care suites, and include a café and retail that will be accessible to the wider community. The vision for the development also includes integration with a childcare centre facilitating intergenerational engagement and interaction.

“As experienced seniors’ lifestyle and care providers we are delighted with the opportunity to grow in the Canberra market, especially given the high demand for seniors living and care in the area, including at our IRT Kangara Waters community in Belconnen,” said IRT Group CEO, Patrick Reid.

“The new development will also increase local employment opportunities both during the construction period and then ongoing once the Community is complete.”

Key elements of the design and built form will be developed collaboratively. As with IRT’s recent projects in NSW, future prospective residents and other stakeholders will be invited to co-design features such as communal areas and neighbourhood precincts.

“With a strong focus on community and social sustainability our vision for the precinct is to feature shared communal areas that will enable residents to foster strong social connections with their broader neighbourhood; and encourage interaction across generations,” Mr Reid said.

“The use of high quality materials and sustainable, energy efficient design principles will deliver operational cost savings that will flow on to residents and minimise their ongoing daily living expenses.”

“We want Denman Prospect to be part of creating the best solution for families who want to keep their parents close and ensure a continuing rich quality of life. IRT is the best company to help us do that,” Mr Byron said.

Detailed planning for the development is expected to commence in the coming months, with development completion anticipated within a four year timeframe.
